Derek Sturn

Theatre Faculty

Derek Sturn was born and grew up overseas in Bangkok, Thailand. Traveling the globe, he eventually landed in the Midwest where he chose to study at North Central College in Naperville. At NCC, Derek studied Theatre and History. While performing in all four years, he took a particular interest in improvisation his senior year, where he assisted teaching the improv class, directed his own show with a popular improv set, and started a weekly college performance night called Late Night Improv, a program that still continues today. From there, Derek auditioned and was accepted into the Second City Conservatory program. He studied for a year with the same ensemble and they ended their program with a show run on Second City's third stage. After performing in improv shows for next year, Derek decided to take his passions to education, where he returned to NCC for his teaching certificate. He is now a staff member at Monroe Middle School in Wheaton, IL, where he also helps run their musicals and sketch group. He works at Oswego High School as a full-time speech coach as well, where last year he coached two comedic pieces and a dramatic short play to IHSA State competition, in which one came in 4th overall. Derek is very excited to work with young adults on a daily basis, especially ones that show an interest and passion for theatrical performing arts. SPA is thrilled to welcome Derek to our Theatre Family!
